"A heartfelt, personal story of the gradual awakening of a woman who comes to see that preferring the 'human to the perfect' does not alienate her from authentic spirituality but allows her to live more fully."
Kathleen Norris,
author of The Cloister Walk
This photo was taken in the spring of 1997, at our house in the Vatican. Mother was meeting yet another dignitary, and we were looking on, worried. If you look closely you can see how tired and bent Mother is, how her eyes are sunken. A few days later, I had my last conversation with Mother, a conversation in which I told her that I was taking time away from the Missionaries of Charity.
